Tree Service in Tioga County, NY

Tubbs Tree Service is based in Spencer, so Tioga County is right in our backyard. We serve Spencer, Candor, Owego, Waverly and the towns in between with removals, clearing and emergency tree work.

Tioga County is home for Tubbs Tree Service. The company is based in Spencer, and owner Jason Tubbs brings 20+ years of experience in forestry, residential tree work, and construction and property management to the same hills and river valleys we drive every day. From the hilltop farms around Candor, Berkshire and Richford to the river towns of Owego, Nichols, Barton and Waverly, this is the county we know best.

Tioga properties tend to be big and mixed: a house lot, a hedgerow, a sugarbush or an old pine plantation, maybe a stretch of creek or Susquehanna River frontage. The state forests in Berkshire, Candor, Newark Valley and Owego sit between 700 and 2,000 feet and hold sugar maple, red maple, red oak, beech, white ash and black cherry, along with planted pine, spruce and larch. Plenty of private woodlots look the same, which means the same pests and the same storm risks reach right up to your back door.

Every job starts with a $50 on-site consultation with Jason. He walks your property, listens to what you want to protect, and writes an itemized plan with several levels of service to choose from. The $50 is credited to the job when you accept your plan. Wood goes to local use as firewood, mulch or sometimes building material, and work is timed with wildlife in mind. For storm damage, our two emergency tiers get help moving faster. Tubbs is fully insured and glad to take the hard jobs other crews pass on.

Tree Issues We See in Tioga County

Dead and dying ash along roads and fence lines

Emerald ash borer was confirmed in Tioga County by July 2013, and it was found near Waverly along Route 17 before 2018. White ash is a natural part of the local hardwood mix, so many yards, hedgerows and woodlots still hold standing dead ash. Those trees dry out and turn brittle, which makes them harder and riskier to climb the longer they stand. Getting them down while the wood is still sound is usually the safer and simpler choice.

Floods that loosen roots along the Susquehanna

The Susquehanna River at Owego hit a record 39.62 feet on September 8, 2011, during Tropical Storm Lee, after reaching 35.9 feet in June 2006. Tioga Terrace measured 11.24 inches of rain during Lee. High water saturates soil, scours creek banks and can leave big trees in Owego, Nichols and Barton standing on undercut roots. A tree that survived the flood can still fail in the next windstorm, so riverside trees deserve a close look.

Wind, tornadoes and heavy wet snow

An EF-1 tornado with 100 mph winds touched down near Barton on July 26, 2012. On November 22, 2024, wet heavy snow and rain left about 7,700 customers without power in NYSEG’s Binghamton Division, which includes Tioga. Snow that sticks to leaves and needles adds enormous weight to limbs. Thinning, end-weight reduction and removing weak trees before winter cut down on broken limbs, blocked driveways and damaged roofs.

Beech leaf disease and spongy moth

Beech leaf disease was newly detected in Tioga County in 2022, and spongy moth caused pockets of moderate defoliation here in 2020. Repeated leaf loss stresses beech, oak and other hardwoods, and stressed trees are more likely to drop limbs or decline. Tubbs does not spray or treat for these pests, but Jason can help you judge which affected trees are worth keeping and which are becoming a hazard to your home or driveway.
