Pruning & Trimming in Tioga County, NY

Tree pruning and trimming in Tioga County, aimed at the problems we actually see here: heavy wet snow, low limbs over farm lanes, and old yard maples in Newark Valley and Candor that deserve another few decades.

Good pruning is quiet work. Done right, you barely notice the tree changed, but it sheds wind better, holds less snow, and stops scraping your roof. In Tioga County, that matters on village streets in Owego and Waverly as much as on a hilltop farm in Berkshire or Richford, where a broken limb can block the only way out.

Before any cut, Jason Tubbs visits for a $50 on-site consultation. With 20+ years of experience in forestry and residential tree work, he will tell you which trees benefit from pruning, which do not, and how much to take. You get an itemized plan with options, and the $50 is credited when you go ahead.

Getting ahead of heavy, wet snow

On November 22, 2024, wet heavy snow and rain left about 7,700 customers out in NYSEG’s Binghamton Division, which covers Tioga. Early snow that lands on leaves loads long limbs until they crack. Thinning dense crowns and shortening heavy, overextended limbs lets snow fall through and lowers the leverage on weak unions. It is one of the most useful things you can do for big yard trees before winter, especially when one blocked driveway can strand a family on a back road.

Clearance for lanes, barns and equipment

Rural Tioga properties need room to move. We raise and trim limbs so you can get through without scratching paint or snapping branches.

  • Crown raising over driveways for plow trucks, delivery trucks and fuel deliveries.
  • Clearing limbs back from barn roofs, silos and outbuildings.
  • Opening farm lanes and field edges for tractors and hay equipment.
  • Lifting branches off rooflines and chimneys in village neighborhoods.

Seasons, sap and nesting birds

Late fall through winter is a practical window for most pruning here. The leaves are off, the structure is easy to see, and birds are not nesting. Maples may drip sap if cut in late winter, which looks alarming but is mostly cosmetic. Bats and nesting birds use trees in warmer months, so for summer work we take a quick wildlife check first and adjust timing when it makes sense.

Why less is often more

Removing too much live canopy at once stresses a tree and can trigger a mass of weak sprouts. We prune with a purpose: deadwood, crossing limbs, clearance and weight reduction. If a tree needs more than a careful prune to be safe, Jason will say so plainly rather than over-cut it.

Pruning & Trimming Questions From Tioga County

When is the right time of year to prune the maples in our Candor yard?

For most maples, late fall through winter works well because the tree is dormant and its structure is easy to read. You may see sap drip if cuts are made as the weather warms, but that rarely harms the tree. Dead or broken limbs can come out any time of year.

Our neighbor’s tree hangs over our yard in Newark Valley. Can you trim it?

Overhanging limbs are a common request, but property lines and neighbor agreements are something to sort out first. We suggest talking with your neighbor, and checking with your town office if there is any doubt. Once everyone agrees, Jason can plan trimming that keeps the tree balanced and healthy.

Branches are rubbing the wire running to my house. Can you trim them?

Tubbs does not work on or near energized lines. Contact your utility first: NYSEG for most of Tioga County, or the Village of Waverly’s municipal electric utility if you are served by Waverly. Once the line is made safe or the utility has done its part, we can handle the rest of the tree.
