Tree Service in Tompkins County, NY
Tompkins County is home base for most of our work. From Ithaca neighborhoods with big old trees over tight lots to rural properties in Newfield, Caroline and Dryden, we handle removals, pruning, stump grinding and storm cleanup across the county.
Tompkins County is home ground for Tubbs Tree Service. Most of our work happens here, from the City of Ithaca and the Village of Cayuga Heights out to the farm roads of Dryden, Groton and Caroline. Jason Tubbs runs the company from Spencer, just over the line in Tioga County, and brings 20+ years of experience in forestry, residential tree work, and construction and property management to every property he walks.
This county asks a lot of a tree crew. In Ithaca, tall maples, oaks and spruces share small lots with rental houses, porches and parked cars, so many removals come down in controlled sections by crane, bucket truck or climbers on ropes. Along Cayuga Lake, Lansing on the east shore and Trumansburg and Ulysses on the west shore bring steep banks and lake views worth protecting. In Danby, Newfield and Enfield, the work shifts to wooded acreage, hedgerows, long driveways and slopes that drop toward the creeks feeding the gorges.
Every job starts the same way: a $50 on-site consultation with Jason. He walks the property with you and writes an itemized plan with several levels of service to choose from, and the $50 is credited to the job when you accept it. Your plan can protect the house, leave habitat for wildlife, and send the wood to local use as firewood, mulch or sometimes building material. For a tree that is already failing, our emergency tiers are on the emergency page. You can request a consultation and pick preferred times on our contact page.
Tree Issues We See in Tompkins County
Ash and beech under pressure
Emerald ash borer was first confirmed in Tompkins County in Cornell’s Arnot Forest, announced in March 2018, and ash makes up about 15% of the trees there. Beech leaf disease was newly detected in the county in 2021. Dying ash turns brittle quickly, which makes it harder and riskier to take down the longer it stands. If you have ash or beech near a house, road or play area, have it looked at early.
Hemlocks on gorge and ravine slopes
Hemlock woolly adelgid was documented in Tompkins County in 2008, and hemlocks dominate the steep slopes around the headwater streams that feed the county’s gorges. Homes near the ravines in Ithaca, Enfield and Ulysses often have hemlocks leaning over drops where a failure lands on a deck, a path or a neighbor’s roof. Work on these slopes usually calls for rigging or a crane rather than simple felling.
Who controls the tree by the curb
Inside the City of Ithaca, Code Chapter 306 says no one may plant, prune or remove a tree on a public street, park or other city property without written permission from the City Forester. Private trees need no permit but must be kept clear of sidewalks, streetlights and signs. The Village of Cayuga Heights has its own Village Forester for right-of-way trees. When in doubt, ask the city or village office first.
Wind that arrives with little warning
On July 24, 2023, a microburst with winds near 100 mph tore through Enfield, uprooting trees and destroying two barns along a 2.5 mile path. Sudden summer wind like that, on top of trees already weakened by pests, is why a storm check matters here. NYSEG serves most of the county, and Groton also has a municipal utility, so know which one to call if a tree comes down on a line.
